Calvary Lutheran Church was founded in 1957 as a mission congregation of the Lutheran Church in America. Upon the merger of the three major Lutheran church bodies in 1987, Calvary became a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
Our church building and adjoining fellowship hall are both handicapped-accessible. The Chancel was remodeled to remove steps that posed a barrier to those with physical disabilities. The lectern and pulpit were redesigned to provide opportunities for all members to be involved as readers or worship assistants. The restrooms in the narthex are also fully accessible.
Calvary is served by Interim Pastor Krista Stokke and the Synodical Authorized Minister's Team of Diane Maertens, and Carol Maertens. They can be reached by calling the church office at 618-397-4989.
We celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion every Sunday except the fifth Sunday which is Service of the Word. We are motivated by a spirit of Christ which is missional. We are empowered to participate in vibrant worship as we praise our God. We welcome everyone to join us, as together, we journey in faith and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Much of the basic tenets of our faith can be found in the Apostle's Creed:
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
